Challenges Facing the Growth of Internet TV

January 22, 2008 by saman01

One of the primary reasons why Internet TV is not the preferred choice of viewers across the world is lack of cheap and fast bandwidth. Even though Net access is increasingly becoming affordable and speeds have zoomed though the roof, watching streaming media over the net is still has room for growth.

The Real Drawbacks of Internet TV
To be fair, there are a lot of other factors that still have room for growth. To begin, streaming technology itself is in its infancy. Output has less than desirable quality, resolutions are still pretty poor and the technology itself requires a shake-up, much like Microsoft did for the PC industry. What this industry requires is free, scalable technology which supports high-quality streaming media on low bandwidth. It should also be able to provide free codecs to all viewers, bar none, so that they can watch the shows and the streaming content of their choice over the Web.

Some Solutions for Streaming Media on the Web
In the short-term, several remedies have been proposed. For example, many companies have begun to stream existing TV shows on the Internet. Some others broadcast pay shows either free of cost on their sites or for lesser pay. Such companies often keep some control over how such pay-per-view shows are broadcast due to reasons like copyright protection, revenue, etc. And some have hot upon a real goldmine – they develop unique content for the Web which is not available elsewhere.
